HP Web Jetadmin Software
Review Date: July 2008
Web Jetadmin is not a new product. Hewlett Packard skipped over
version 9 to version 10, probably to recognize their product
launch ten years ago.
Should you use version 8 or 10? It depends upon what you want to accomplish.
Version 10 is real time but squirrelly - at least more so than
version 8. Although version 10 constantly polls equipment on
the network, I found that it may take as long as two to three
hours to ping a device depending on the fleet size.
Version 10 has the SMTP proxy that can be pushed to workstations
so that non-networked devices may be monitored from the proxy
workstation. I haven’t seen that in action so can’t comment
on it at this time. It also has filters which are real cool
so that you can focus on only certain devices or only printers
that meet certain attributes such as low toner or paper out.
If you’ve never used Web Jetadmin, I’d recommend starting with version 8. It takes about two hours to install and it’s pretty straight forward. It doesn’t have the bells and whistles of version 10 but let’s you get in the game quickly. If you find it a valuable tool, then migrate to version 10.
